IAN HART: Has Worthing really stagnated?

I was reminded of this when I read in last week’s Herald about Zoo Jewellery, in Liverpool Road, Worthing, ceasing trading on January 16, and how three owners had stated that Worthing as a town had been allowed to stagnate and this was one of the primary reasons for the closure.

Regular readers of this column will know that I don’t stand on ceremony and I write what I think, and at times that will go directly against the opinion of many others, but that’s the ‘beauty’ of this column.

For example, I still maintain the council made a huge error with the building of the Splashpoint leisure complex and I won’t change my stance on that.

Related to that, I also feel that another huge mistake has been made turning down the original planning application for the old Aquarena site by Roffey.

But neither of these warrants the use of the word ‘stagnate’.

Mistakes have been made over the years, but in the main I actually feel Worthing is in a more positive place than it’s been for a few years and, hopefully, things will get better.

Zoo had previously had two other branches in Winchester and Salisbury, which shut before the Worthing shop. Had those places also been allowed to stagnate as well?

If Worthing has stagnated that much, how come a firm in a similar field, Pressley’s Pandora and Links of London concessions, in the same time have opened another two units in Montague Street?
