IAN HART: Hollywood good guys about to fight back

With the ongoing sex scandal enveloping Hollywood showing no signs of reaching a conclusion, there does appear to be a feel-good story coming out on the back of it, involving no less than Captain Von Trapp from the Sound of Music.

The big budget film All the Money in the World, directed by Oscar-winner Ridley Scott, tells the story of the 1970s kidnapping of the Grandson of J. Paul Getty, one-time richest man in the world.

It was all set for release just before Christmas, starring Mark Wahlberg and a Kevin Spacey in the role of Getty.

As a result of the allegations made against Spacey, Scott and the film’s producers faced a problem with their $40million movie.

Scott recast the Getty role, bringing in 87-year-old Christopher Plummer, and spent a reported $10million reshooting all of the scenes involving Getty’s character.

It was all done in nine days and the film still managed to hit the cinemas in time for the lucrative holiday market.

The film has been well received critically, is doing great business at the box office, Plummer is receiving plaudits from all directions for his performance and after success at the Golden Globes there’s even talk of an Oscar nomination.

All on the back of the Spacey scandal.

At least this is something positive and, in Plummer’s case, clear evidence that you’re never too old.
