LETTER: Confused by comments

I just had to share my thoughts after reading the article published regarding the Teville Gate site (Herald, February 16).

I am confused by councillor Humphreys’ comments about ‘Labour’s remarks’ being no more than ‘desperate pre-election criticism’.

It would be far easier to understand Mr Humphreys’ view, and even maybe agree with it, if Worthing Borough Council had handled the Teville Gate situation far better than public records show.

Hanson Capital Management submitted a planning application for a residential scheme for the site back in 2006.

Nearly 11 years on and not one brick from those old derelict buildings has come face to face with the sledgehammers from any demolition company.

Eleven years on, with various planning applications, architects models, printed plans and council promises coming and going, still Worthing town’s northern gateway stands derelict and destitute.

The borough council will have numerous reasons for its failure to regenerate this site.

The residents of Worthing should look at the 11-year record of the borough council regarding its inadequate handling of the Teville Gate site and actually question how, the councillors they have elected can allow this situation to continue.

If anything, Mr Deen’s remarks are extremely valid.

In my view, if anyone is playing the ‘pre-election desperation’ card, it’s the leader of the Tory-led borough council, Mr Humphreys.
