LETTER: More parking warden time

Thank you for reporting on the topic I have raised with local councillors about the nuisance of illegal parking in Shoreham.

At the risk of seeming to be a single-issue obsessive complainer (which I’m really not – I could complain about lots of issues), can I make a couple of further comments on the responses you’ve had from the relevant councils?

An Adur person says that renewing faded yellow lines will ‘improve compliance’.

Hmm, really? It’s a good move, and maybe some people will observe parking restrictions if they see them more clearly, but these folks are not the problem – it’s the ones who wilfully disregard yellow lines (and disabled bays) who won’t be deterred by new paint but who may be put off if they’re assured of getting a ticket.

And somebody from West Sussex County Council says money from penalties in Adur ‘goes towards covering the costs of enforcement in the district’. Is this so? I understood that penalty pounds go to the county council and are distributed across the county as they decide, not necessarily to the area where the tickets were issued, and that Adur does not get as much parking-warden coverage as some other patches.

Perhaps your fearless investigative reporters could look into this and get the actual figures?

I believe that an effective approach would involve more parking warden time devoted to Adur.

If Adur councillors successfully argue the case with West Sussex County Council for enough funding from the penalty pot, it would help to generate the income to make additional enforcement affordable.
