LETTER: In response to correspondent

In response to the letter published in the Herald dated February 2, submitted by councillor Mr G. Barton, some respect and acknowledgement needs to be brought before the electorate.

Firstly, I made a full and succinct statement at the public meeting, in that my overriding concern for the proposal to close off Church Lane in the first instance was that the traffic would use Dancton Lane, thus causing a greater hazard at the junction of West Street and increasing the flow of traffic along a greater stretch of West Street, in addition my concern was that the children from Rectory Farm Estate would be confronted by this additional traffic.

Later at the meeting chaired by Mr Loughton the proposal for option 4 was discussed and approved by the residents to close both Dancton Lane and Church Lane.

I am not convinced that this is an option that will in any way resolve the concerns of residents, the resulting traffic flow will ultimately turn down Busticle Lane, queue at the West Street junction to turn right and head west along West Street thus dramatically increasing traffic along the whole stretch of West Street. An analogy one needs to consider is traffic flows are comparable with river flows, block off the flow and the water will find another route.

As for the comment of having tunnel vision, yes I perhaps do have when it comes to spending £50,000 on a scheme which could well create more accidents and frustration to drivers in the medium to long term. Maybe the tunnel vision could be reversed, to a vision of a tunnel on the A27, to give a positive solution to this problem.

In closing, I wish to inform councillor Barton that for me decades of serving the community in public office is without fear or favour, but to listen to advice from experienced officers, balanced with logic and a pragmatic approach which sometimes will result in not pleasing everyone, but for the greater good of the community. Finally, I have no appetite for point scoring for political gain.
