A27 Expressway could be on the cards

Phillip Ellis (Herald, May 12) is clearly not alone in avoiding the Worthing, Arundel and Chichester section of the A27 due to holdups, but just how many are seeking alternative routes is the big question and to some extent the answer could determine the future line of the A27.

Whether that whole section will be bypassed, as I think Mr Ellis would like, may not be entirely out of the question if schemes in The Department for Transport publication called ‘Road Investment Strategy: Strategic Vision’ are realised.

Their vision up to 2040 will see the south coast trunk road become an ‘Expressway’ and the map on page 49 (of the publication) shows the extent of the road building.

Now whether this Expressway will be built in the countryside that many like Mr Ellis would wish to leave in peace is not clear – but one thing is.

Unless we come up with something better than the 1960s predict and provide methodology, it is not only the peace in the countryside that will be lost but many towns and cities as well.
