I realise West Sussex County Council finds itself short of resources in great measure because of the way that the Government has denuded local councils of resources for some years now, but, even while making that excuse for them, it might be a possibility that at least some members of the ruling group on WSCC may have voted for the Government that has perpetrated this outrage.

Sadly this seems not to be an isolated example locally or nationally of those in need not being properly helped – I think of examples such as this week’s revelations about meals for children in need, the failure to provide laptops for deprived children so that they can learn at home during lockdown, and the failure thus far to promise to extend the additional £29 per week to those on Universal Credit.

Do we live in a civilised and caring society, locally and nationally, or don’t we?
