Better use of Ferry Road parking space

As Adur residents, my family are regular users of the car park on the Ferry Road side of the footbridge and reading the recent published newspaper article plus knowing some of the background, I feel that I must write to protest as I believe the council layout plan is quite dangerous to pedestrians, including those with pushchairs as well as cyclists.

The car park itself is small so it’s not a huge area, consequently space has to be used efficiently and safely. The council’s plan shows the main access going diagonally right through the car park area widening as it goes.

So all cars and even lorries such as dustcarts servicing the properties on the east, have to share exactly the same road as all the people coming off the bridge.

Surely this is a complete disregard for road safety? Painted lines are not sufficient – children and most people tend to disregard those. The pedestrian / cyclist access should be kept separate or there is little doubt a moving manoeuvring vehicle looking for a parking space or way out, is going to hit someone or a bike colliding with its side causing injury or worse.

I also see that the pedestrian crossing is being moved to immediately next to a road junction and where this car park entrance is going to be.

Surely having it this close is going to lead to accidents. There has never been one there with the existing layout so why move it at great expense? Did the police also not raise and objection?

Yes, landscaping is all very nice to improve the visual look, but as this is a small area and meant to be a car park, not a country park, should so much space be taken up with fancy raised banks and not parking spaces? I am sure trees and small areas could be planted around losing minimal space.

I think making a small area look pretty at the expense of public safety not to mention the large cost of this plan, which includes moving a pedestrian crossing, must run into hundreds of thousands of pounds.

I would have thought, this is far beyond what is actually needed or indeed wanted. Rather than waste this money, would the council not be better spending it on improving public amenities elsewhere?

I do hope common sense prevails for the benefit of the people in the area and visitors alike.
