Bitterly disappointed

'FAILED miserably' is right (letters, Observer, June 3). I was bitterly disappointed that the Yes to AV campaigners made so little attempt to answer Cameron's spurious arguments, which could have been so easily refuted. Hitler's propaganda minister, Dr Goebbels, said that if one had a lie to tell, make it a big one, and keep on telling it, and it would eventually be believed. This is what Cameron did: one, FPTP is fairer; two, AV will be unduly expensive; three, AV is too complicated for voters to understand. These are all lies. His other point - FPTP produces strong government - is valid, and that is the chief trouble with it. Hitler had a strong government. The only question is: 'What kind?' We all know the kind we shall now suffer - another century of alternating Tory and Labour governments, elected with a minority of votes cast, but claiming 'a mandate to govern', and forcing through policies which up to 70 per cent of the voters have rejected. Finally, why did nobody mention democracy? If the word means anything at all, it means 'one vote, one value', which never happens under FPTP.
