Brexit '“ There's always a silver lining

As a Remain campaigner, one of the 48 per cent of voters wanting to remain in the European Union, I personally find our current situation both depressing and full of uncertainty.

I believe we have to be pragmatic about the result and negotiate a positive way forward to unite our country. To this end, I sincerely hope that Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England sticks to his post to steady our economy.

Looking to the future, it is unlikely that Article 50 will be initiated before the Tory party conference and, if Conservative Liam Fox MP is to be believed, we are likely to leave on or around January 1, 2019. It is also important to realise that we will not see any of the £160 million per week promised by the Leave campaigners to the NHS until after the date when we expect to leave. So don’t expect instant cash injections into our services.

However, if the glass-half-full attitude prevails, we can take heart in that our younger generation has experienced politics first hand and will, if nurtured and encouraged, be set to change our country for the good of all future generations.

Liberal Democrats will continue to welcome and fight for everyone, to hold those in power to account through scrutiny and challenge, and to put forward a positive approach to enable us all to survive and thrive in the new situation.

There is always a silver lining, we just need to work together to find it.
