Closure plans are ‘strongly opposed’

ARUN District Council commissioned outside consultants to report on options for future leisure facilities in the district.

Their initial options included the possible move of the Littlehampton Swimming and Sports Centre to the town centre (then building flats on the vacated seafront site), and the closure of the Windmill Entertainment Centre. Understandably, there was considerable public opposition to this and Colliers International was asked to carry out further work and report back to Arun this month.

I have had considerable feedback from local residents, all of whom strongly oppose any closure of the current swimming centre and relocation to the town centre. Access and parking would be more difficult there, especially as the pool serves not just the town, but the whole surrounding district. What is needed is an extended learner pool, and upgrading of changing rooms at the present site, and not more seafront flats there!

The Windmill provides not just excellent and comfortable cinema facilities, but, crucially, a home for our many community musical, theatre and variety groups in which to perform. Its closure cannot seriously be considered.

I will do all I can to represent these views of my constituents and the wider community, and to oppose any such plans proceeding further.

I am also opposed to any plans to close the already out-sourced Tamarisk Centre, which provides a vital day centre for many of our older residents.
