Concert for Cancer Research UK

Upper Beeding and Steyning Primary schools joined forces under the leadership of their music teachers Mrs Corrine Wellby and Mrs Sarah Pargeter to provide an evening’s entertainment.

The children performed with endless energy and great enthusiasm a range of songs from the beautifully sung ‘Across the Fields’ to the hilarious ‘A Young Austrian’, a song with the most ridiculous actions.

Mrs Sally Randall, the Assistant Head and VI Form Director organised a group of students to help throughout the evening from supervising the children to selling refreshments – their assistance was invaluable and they proved to be a big hit among the children.

Mr Jonathan Reeves, Head of Music offered additional entertainment in the form of student band ‘High Trees’ (Luke Knight, Daniel Freer, James Palmer, James Martin, Ellie Baker, Charlotte McGuire, Alex Eyres, Lucia Dominguez-Dominguin) who performed a selection of songs that they had written.

A raffle was also held with prizes kindly donated by Mid Sussex Golf Club; Fountain Inn (Ashurst); Toast by the Coast (Shoreham); Just Bananas; Jordan’s Cake and Bake House; Garlic Wood Farm; Flicker Rose; Steyning Bookshop; Vintage and Home; Get Waisted; Spotted. Truffles also donated 200 cup cakes which were sold during the interval.

The children closed the concert with a song which was originally learnt by the local schools as part of a ‘Virtual Choir’ project in which schools across West Sussex recorded their children singing and then their voices were merged into one recording to create a big children’s choir.

The evening was opened by Mrs Claire Mann, chair of Cancer Research UK Steyning Area who thanked the children for all their hard work. The total raised so far is £1860, which is an increase on the amount raised two years ago.
