Debate beliefs with respect

It is one thing for the mayor, on our behalf, to extend a warm welcome to the Muslim community and congratulate them on the acquisition of a property for an Islamic Centre.

But it is quite another to misrepresent the Christian faith. Both serious Muslims and Christians know that Christianity does not teach that Jesus was merely a prophet.

Christians believe Jesus the Christ was the incarnation of the eternal Creator-Redeemer God who is Father, Son & Holy Spirit.

Muslims do not believe in the triune God, neither do they believe that Jesus the Son was crucified for our sins and was raised from the dead.

When Jesus asked His disciples who people were saying He was, they replied, among other things, “…some say [as they do today]…one of the prophets.” Then Jesus asked His disciples who had witnessed His words and deeds, the same question. Peter said clearly, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus blessed Peter for having answered correctly and said, “on this rock”, i.e. on this foundation statement of faith, “I will build my church” (Matt.16:13-20).

If we desire authentic unity in God, it must be around truth not wishful thinking and platitudes. In the meantime we debate our beliefs honestly, peacefully and with respect.
