Perhaps you can allow me space to pay tribute to Chris and Barry’s, the Susans Road men’s hairdressers who, I’m disappointed to discover, have finally closed shop after 50 years of business.

They’ve tackled my hair in its various styles for the whole of that time, and before that as apprentices at the old Roselands hairdressers, in Seaside.

Whilst I’m clearly unable to directly compare, they must have provided the best value for money haircut and entertainment in town. In addition to the inevitable ‘banter’ between Chris and Barry, there was always the probability of bumping into someone you hadn’t seen for decades, of catching up on gossip and of mining shared interests such as music, sport and local history. Discretion always being their undoubted byword.

I’m sure, like so many others, I wish both Chris and Barry long, happy and healthy retirements. They were a cornerstone of Eastbourne that will be sorely missed.

Hairwise, I guess I’ll have to return to my hippy days.
