England's first croquet club may have been set up in West Worthing

Sir Peter Bottomley's column in last week's Herald covered the good work West Worthing Tennis Club's Pétanque section is doing for charity and the part that bowls has played in the town's history.

He refers to bowls being played as early as 1907.

As a member of the Croquet section also at West Worthing Tennis Club in Titnore Way, I feel I must mention that the tennis club was founded in 1875 and joined croquet which was being played in West Worthing prior to that (documentary evidence available).

Worthing has in fact the greatest claim to being England’s first croquet club.
