EU debate should be about what is really important

In the long run, technology will provide us all with the goods we can intelligently need, on an egalitarian basis.

The EU debate should, therefore, not be about the economy but about what is really important – the environment and nature, social needs in distinct towns and countryside and a limited population, its cultural identity and history, what it is that defines a country, other than its borders and the government that controls them.

Either Europe or Britain is the ultimate country or, perish the thought, a globalised society under little more than commercial control.
