EU: We've been here before

The referendum vote looms and many of us are wallowing in a quagmire of faction, leaving us dazed and confused as if we have just exited from a long corridor of distorting mirrors.

Let us, however, take comfort from history. We are not, I repeat not experiencing something new. The world survived Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan, the Borgias et al, and will do so again. Do not take my word for this, the wisdom of others still shines as brightly as ever.

Plato 370 BC. The punishment which the wise suffer, who refuse to take part in the government, is to live under the government of worse men.

Tacitus 68-96 AD. The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.

Macus Tullius Cicero C.50 BC. Persistence in one opinion has never been considered a merit in political leaders.

Herodotus 450 BC. Very few things happen at the right time, and the rest do not happen at all. The conscientious historian will correct these defects.

There you are; the Masters have spoken. All will be well soon – well, not straight away.
