Failed miserably

WHAT utter tosh from Clive Bishop (Letters, Bexhill Observer, May 20). Would Clive have declared that: 'Quite rightly, Alternative Voting is now off the reform agenda' had the Yes campaign won the AV referendum?

It also seems to have escaped his notice that the referendum was not about “proving” First Past The Post but about making the case for AV which, unsurprisingly, he and the principal cheerleaders, the Liberal Democrats, failed miserably to do.

Scaremongering about the “death” of reform, and branding No voters as fascists, communists, dinosaurs and Tories got the punishment it deserved.

The key to all this is the arrogance of the AV cheerleaders who set themselves up as the champions of reform and who still claim the monopoly, despite being pulverised both in the referendum and the council elections.

In reality they have fumbled the ball and it has been picked up by others - people who did not sell their souls for a seat in unelected power, people who can be trusted to keep their word.
