Get developer to refurbish Ferring's public toilets

In response to Councillor Dendle's review of public toilets as stated in Worthing Herald (September 22), he goes to great lengths in defending his department at Arun District Council regarding their views of public expenditure while sidestepping the real issue.

He states that ‘to bring all toilets up to a decent and acceptable standard would cost up to £1 million and therefore have listed 12 sites for closure’.

So he is admitting that his department has failed to use the revenue raised by council taxpayers in the proper manner during that past 20 years – ie failure to maintain and provide facilities for the disabled.

He then goes on to say that it would be better if parish councils took over the responsibility for running these toilets.

We in Ferring have two such sites in question, used for public convenience.

Where does Cllr Dendle think that Ferring Parish Council is going to get funds (up to two portions of £1 million) to bring our WC sites ’up to a decent and acceptable standard’.

He refused to acknowledge that his department is at fault and entirely to blame for the current situation (and no one is held accountable).

There is, however, one solution to this dilemma. In Ferring, there are currently two major house building projects taking place by using the 106 agreements, funds could be used to refurbish both the WC sites and then afterwards, transfer future responsibility to Ferring Parish Council. Only then will the running costs need to be funded via the PC precept.

This will satisfy all parties concerned with minimal extra cost.
