I'm stumped about Hastings Borough Council's bin charges

I read with interest your piece in last weeks Observer about Rother Council’s decision to in some financial way compensate users and charge only £35.

Hastings Council by contrast charges twice that sum (£70) for this garden waste service and saw fit to take the payment from my bank account (and doubtless thousands more bank accounts) the same week it decided to suspend the service.

Hardly cricket as they say. I, like many others, have paid for a non-existent service because the council insist on payment only by direct debit.

I would much rather have donated that money to the NHS!
