It's a rubbish idea

I HAVE no idea what the policy view for Rother might be under the new regime since the May Elections (and my repeated ritual humiliation of not being elected!), but might I hope that some will view the ConDem government proposals led by that extraordinary Minister for Communities Eric Pickles to return rubbish disposal to weekly bin collections as madness!

We have now managed to engage local residents into twice weekly household waste and made people (especially the younger generation) mindful of the need to change their habits by recycling more. But that could all be undone by the populist move to return to weekly collections and undermine sustainable and ecologically more viable solutions.

I expect a deluge of opposing letters from those who hate recycling and like to ‘chuck everything out’ without thinking of the consequences Could I also add that I hope all members of BALI fighting to avoid landfill in their backyards along Turkey Road also oppose weekly collections, as it seems so many don’t make the link between the increase in waste from households and places where it needs to go.

It’s a dirty topic and not the most eye catching for local politicians, but could I hope for once Rother does the right thing?
