The Conservative Government’s decision to scrap subsidies for onshore wind farms means the UK will struggle to meet its renewable energy target of 15 per cent by 2020.

This is bad news for the environment, the economy and the country’s energy supplies.

Onshore wind has so far proven itself to be the cheapest way to hit the legally binding energy targets of 15 per cent.

The cost of producing electricity from onshore wind turbines is around 7–9p per kWh, which is around half the cost of offshore wind and a quarter of the costs of solar panels.

It is also cheaper, on average, than nuclear power.

Under the 2010-2015 coalition government, it was estimated that £37 billion was invested in renewable energy, which supported almost half a million green jobs.

For that reason 20 leading figures from the renewable energy industry praised the Lib Dems for their efforts in government to make the UK “cleaner, greener and more open to investment in renewables.”

Now, with the Lib Dems gone, the Tory’s green mask is slipping.

The UK will very soon negotiate a climate deal in Paris which will set a legally binding global agenda for tackling climate change.

With a government that is not willing to invest in a vital renewable energy scheme, the UK looks to be distancing itself from the huge environmental challenges that we, as part of a global community, need to be taking responsibility for.
