LETTER: Overgrown bridleways

I am writing in frustration regarding the state of our local bridleways.

Despite emailing the council, marking the problem areas on a map and sending a picture of my face after having argued with an overhanging bramble bush, nothing has been done.

I speak as a local horse rider whose aim is to enjoy the local countryside and try to keep away from the busy roadways – as I’m sure every walker, dog walker and mountain biker wishes too as well.

This morning, having tried to negotiate one of our few bridleways available around Highdown area, I had to bend double over my horse’s neck due to overhanging branches, which actually gives me very little control.

We were soon in a very tricky situation having encountered a large bag that someone had kindly dumped in the hedge, causing my young horse to spook and try to beat a hasty retreat.

This was not a happy situation because the path is now so narrow and overgrown, but I have to accept that risk as part of my sport.

If, however, I had been followed by a walker I could possibly have mown them down – an horrific thought.

This particular path runs from Highdown to Angmering, parallel with the A259, and is heavily used by dog walkers and cyclists as well as horse riders.

However the condition of it is now getting so bad that the advance visibility is very restricted and it is virtually impossible to pass anyone met without them climbing into the hedge.

I have used this path for years and have never before seen it so overgrown.

Any helpful suggestions welcome!
