LETTER: '˜Put pressure on Highways'

I don't know what coverage you gave to the Grove Lodge roundabout when the traffic lights were out of action during the summer school holidays and so many thought that the traffic flowed more smoothly but nothing has been done about it since.

Having had correspondence with Highways England, to little effect, I took to emailing Chris Grayling, the transport minister, to see if he could intervene. This was passed onto Highways England, whom did reply.

In it they appreciated that the traffic flowed more smoothly but are unwilling to turn them off now even for a trial period, though we had the trial back in the summer.

Their concern is the students would have trouble crossing the road. My response was to keep the pedestrian lights which would from time to time halt the traffic. Highways England says this would not be a viable option as the pedestrian lights would not be phased together.

So what they are saying, which doesn’t happen now, is that the lights at opposing sides of the roundabout have to be linked together. Utter rubbish. Highways England have plans for major improvements on the A27 including the Grove Lodge roundabout, but not before March 2021.

In my last email from them they talk about improvements to the signalling taking place very shortly, which no doubt will cost money when all they need to do is turn the darn things off.

What I’m proposing is a major assault on Highways England through the press and media to put real pressure to bear and for them to wake up and realise that they are there for the benefit of all and not an entity unto themselves. They do go into greater lengths but still firmly believe that no one should challenge their view.
