LETTER: Tax credits

The Anglican Bishop of Portsmouth, The Rt Revd Christopher Foster, spoke out in the House of Lords against the government’s proposals to cut tax credits, which would see people on the lowest incomes lose up to £2,600 for a family with two children and £3,000 for a family with three children.

Describing the proposals as “morally unjustifiable” Bishop Christopher urged the government to consult further and revisit their proposals to make immediate cuts to tax credits while gradually increasing the minimum wage.

He said: “To be assured that you will be better off in five years’ time will not help these families to pay the rent or gas and electricity bills. The Government is boldly confident that this will be so within five years.

“Their confidence for the future feels like extraordinary optimism today for the working families, including four million children, who will pay such a huge price and bear such a heavy burden immediately on the introduction of these changes.”

Bishop Christopher welcomed the vote in the House of Lords which forced the government to reconsider the timing and impact of their proposals.
