LETTER: Tracing book

Many of your readers will remember Frank Worley’s Fish & Chip shop at 42 North Street, Worthing, where I worked as a teenager.

Frank served with distinction in the 11th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment in the First World War as a Sergeant with Lieutenant Edmund Blunden on the Menin Road.

Blunden recommended Frank for the VC although he was actually awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, one below the VC.

In Blunden’s acclaimed memoir of his time at war, Undertones of War, he writes at length and with great affection about my grandfather.

Blunden inscribed four copies of his book to my grandfather and one each to his three children.

It is my grandfather’s that is missing.

May I, through your excellent paper, put out an appeal for readers to check their bookshelves, just in case? A copy of the inscription would be historically important, so if that was all that was available, I’d still be thrilled.
