Not in keeping

AFTER reading letters in the Observer, about how nice the new promenade looks with the wonky sheds that do not give any shelter at all and gardens with tombstones and white grit that make them look like a cemetery.

I wonder if some people have ever seen a nice garden. Would anyone in their right mind want a wonky shed full of holes in their own garden with tombstones around the borders of their lawn? The sheds are not in keeping with anything around, they are an eyesore. Will they still be there in 100 years time like the old ones?

My wife and I walk along the whole length of the sea front on most days. We walked along the promenade on June 3 and 4 at midday - two of the hottest days this year and most of the park benches were empty and only two people sitting in one of the sheds, so they are not clogged with people. When we returned later in the afternoon there were still only a few people sitting on the benches and no one at all in the sheds.

At the east end of Bexhill, nearly every bench was clogged with people sitting on them, the lovely shelters had people sitting in them out of the wind enjoying the sun.

My wife and I asked several people just out of interest, what they thought of the west end. Everyone of them said it had been ruined, and like Mr Lambert said: “The money would have been better spent renovating the Edwardian shelters.” Why didn’t the council just dig simple borders in the grass and have simple flowers? Why is it necessary for children to have a playground when they have all the beach to play on as our children did? Do not let these lunatic designers loose on the east end of Bexhill, otherwise we won’t have any tourists.
