Permits essential for town's workers

FURTHER to my previous letter (Gazette, May 13) about Arun District and West Sussex County councils' civil parking enforcement coming into force on July 5 in Littlehampton, I would like to state that I do not think people should park on double yellow lines and if they do, I have no problem with them getting a parking fine.

Nor do I want one-hour parking restrictions to be removed.

What I do want is for the residents, visitors and staff who work or live above Pier Road shops to be able to park fairly near their homes or place of work, without getting a parking ticket.

We have all parked for over the last 20 years in areas that are marked with one-hour waiting time, with no problems arising at all. Now, however, after one hour we will be issued with a parking fine.

We will all be expected to either report to work or come home and drive around trying to find a parking space that has no restriction – these would be at least two streets away, if we are lucky.

Fine sometimes, but on a busy weekend when the sun is shining, these places are impossible to find around the seafront or by the river.

We have finally been given a straightforward answer from the council, in writing, to the question ''Will we be issued with residents/business parking permits?" Answer: no.

Also, the fact that we pay business rates, council tax and road tax does not, apparently, give us the right to park near our own home or place of work!

Now, we know that the councils are very short of money (possibly to erect more wooden sculptures or insure/maintain the vitally important long bench when it is finished in summer 2010?) and we are in a recession.

However, surely residents in Littlehampton should be given some consideration and not be expected to have to drive around looking for somewhere to park fairly near their home, or place of work, where they won't be given a parking ticket?
