Not only is he still battling with a long-drawn out recovery process, he has found time to contribute to your paper week in, week out, and at the same time completing a book about “extraordinary runners from around the world”.

He has sent a copy to his “Good Samaritan”, a passing Pizza delivery guy, without whose timely aid he would definitely be a “gonner”...

Phil has run the marathon himself in Berlin, 2008, alongside the great and inspirational Haile Selassie.

“In The Running” was published by Summersdale on September 8, priced £9.99
