Please use crossing

FOLLOWING Chris Faerber’s letter “Lights not needed” (Gazette, April 21) about the Beaumont Park zebra crossing, I would like to draw attention to the Highway Code, Laws ZPPPCRGD, reg 19 & RTRA sect 25(5).

Rule 19 states: “Zebra crossings. Give traffic plenty of time to see you and to stop before you start to cross. Vehicles will need more time when the road is slippery. Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing.

“Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped.”

I only high-light this section to point out to Mrs Faerber that if a pedestrian has stepped onto the crossing, they do actually have priority.

However, having taken the trouble to point this out, I do agree with most points that she raises, but I am very happy with Tesco there, though. I also live relatively locally and do drive/cycle and walk to Tesco.

People do not use the crossing, though, and just walk in front of you, the same as they always did, before the crossing was installed.

But, please, not a light-controlled crossing, which would be a waste of money and energy in the long term.
