Pulling the wool over our eyes

Over the weekend the Brexiteers once again returned to scare mongering about how the UK is powerless to stop new countries joining the EU.

What they failed to mention was that Turkey has been trying to join for 30 years now with little progress and in this time only one of 35 chapters in the approval process has been concluded.

Their shameless scare-mongering reveals two things.

First, this episode shows a worrying lack of depth in the Leave campaign’s understanding of Europe. The EU’s decision to proceed must be based on unanimous approval – this means every member can veto Turkey’s accession.

Secondly, as many on the Leave campaign are experienced politicians and will understand this, the alternative conclusion is that the anti-Europeans are happily and knowingly misleading the public.

As the debate enters into its final stages, it’s high time the Brexiteers talked about the facts and stopped pulling the wool over our eyes!
