Riverbank stars?

IT was good to see Mike Thomson quoted in last week’s Golden Years (Herald, June 14).

He was commenting on the early-1970s photograph of his mum and dad, Shirley and John, mine hosts at The Lady Jane, Shoreham Beach, with a Sussex cricketer at a charity bat signing.

Mike suggested the cricketer was Jim Parks, but it was, in fact, the late Ken Suttle.

In passing, may I remind Mike that we both played football back in the ‘70s for former Shoreham Beach side Riverbank, whose spiritual home was “the Jane”?

I still see two other former Riverbank players, goalkeeper Eddie Colquhoun and midfield dynamo Mick Bowen, in my travels round town.

And the other night in the Royal Sovereign, we had nearly enough for a five-a-side team when ex-striker Geoff Porter ghosted up to the bar on my blind side while on a flying visit from Canada.

Any other old Riverbank stars out there?
