Schools receive Active Kids equipment

In total 146 schools, groups and clubs local to Sainsbury’s Horsham are registered to the scheme, which has helped to donate £4,218,961 worth of equipment across West Sussex since the scheme began in 2005.

Active Kids Ambassador, Ellie Simmonds, said: “The new equipment will really help kids in West Sussex lead healthier and more active lifestyles. Being able to inspire kids to cook healthy meals is extremely important.”

Heron Way Primary School was the top collecting organisation local to the Horsham store this year, collecting 31,992 vouchers.

The School has been registered to the Active Kids scheme since 2005 and Mr Crump, Headmaster said: “Customers at Sainsbury’s Horsham have been really supportive this year and it’s great to be the top collecting organisation in our area. The scheme has helped us teach the benefits of a healthier more active lifestyle to hundreds of children over the last few years and we’re really looking forward to getting active with this year’s equipment”.

Sainsbury’s Horsham customers collected vouchers in-store between January and May 20, earning one voucher for every £10 spent in supermarkets and £5 in convenience stores.

This September, practical cookery became compulsory for children up to Year 9 in the new national curriculum, published by the Department for Education.

To support these key changes, over 100 new cookery and nutrition toolkits were added to the range of sports and cooking equipment.

Teacher resource toolkits, developed in collaboration with the British Nutritional Foundation and the Department of Education, will equip school children with the materials, ingredients and knowledge to learn the skills to lead healthier lives.

Nearly 53,000 schools, clubs and groups now signed up to benefit from their membership to Sainsbury’s Active Kids. This year alone, the scheme has delivered over £14 million worth of equipment and experiences to schools, clubs and organisations. Meanwhile, £150 million worth of equipment and experiences has been donated to schools, groups and clubs across the UK since it launched in 2005.
