Shocking state of grass verges in Littlehampton
Whispering Smith's comments regarding the state of the grass verges in Littlehampton have prompted me to write in his support. One recent morning at around 8am the Highways Department grass cutting team roared into Cornwall Road. About ten minutes later they had gone, and in their wake was what can only be described as an untidy mess.
Before they arrived we had overgrown verges with seeding weeds and grass up to two feet high, and now there are piles of smelly decaying grass, and here and there are large tufts which have been missed by the blades of the mower.Among this are cut up fragments of litter and crumpled drinks cans which were waiting unseen in the long grass. The Highways Dept only cuts the grass about six times each year, so I have been informed, and it is not enough.
Also the machinery is only fit for cutting rough verges on the main roads as it does not pick up the cuttings. It’s all about time and money and getting the job done as cheaply as possible.
Some residents cut the grass outside their houses at their own expense and in their own time because they have pride in where they live and it looks really nice and neat. It would be much better if the grass could be cut to the same standard as the parks and gardens around Littlehampton. In recent years some attractive trees have been planted in our road to replace the old ones which are coming to the end of their lives, and we appreciate this. It is such a shame that the verges are regularly mutilated by bad management.
