Some luck might be needed

Like them I too was disappointed by the way in which Maurice became mayor over and above the deputy mayor Stuart Earl, but I do wish him luck in his new post.

However, some luck might be what he needs if he is to successfully carry out the three roles for which he is now responsible.

He will be mayor, a demanding office which is traditionally a non-political one and takes up a great deal of time.

As a councillor he will also need to find time to represent the people of Sidley.

Furthermore, as the only Labour councillor now on Rother District Council, he has the added obligation to represent all those in Bexhill specifically and Rother in general who voted Labour at the local election.

They, in particular, will want evidence of Maurice promoting Labour values and policies whenever possible, especially as Labour’s only voice at Council meetings.

They will also expect him to challenge inevitable further council cuts in front line services brought about by the Conservative government’s significant reduction in funding to local authorities such as Rother over the next two years.
