Squash club’s NSPCC fundraiser

On Saturday October 18, the Final of the first Exley Cup was keenly contested by Sean Goring and Mike Van der Weyden. The handicap system produced a thrilling match – the culmination of the Tournament that had run for several weeks, attracting 72 Club entrants.

Both finalists had played their semi-finals earlier in the afternoon, so stamina was always going to be a factor. After taking a 2-0 lead (15-12, 15-11), Sean allowed Mike to claw his way back into the match, taking the next two games 15-13 and 15-9 to draw level. In the deciding game Sean found enough energy to win a high quality match and claim the Exley Cup.

The ‘Tickety Boo’ Plate Final for first round losers saw Russell Cooper dropping the first game 3-15 before recovering to overcome Dan O’kane 3-1.

Over 100 members supported the Finals and evening fundraising, which raised a total of £2,438 for the NSPCC, a charity supported by the late David Exley, who had been a keen and active member of Storrington Squash Club.

An auction, with prizes that included tickets for a Manchester United match and a day on an ocean-going racing yacht, raised £650. There was a Raffle and a sponsored chest-waxing of Cup-winner Sean Goring made £290 and was enjoyed by everyone-except Sean!

In the evening members were entertained with music by the talented group, Z-Star.

Club Manager, Dany Guiriaboye said: “I would like to thank all Club members, local businesses who donated prizes and the organizing team of Sally Yule, Arlene Tappenden, Nigel Rainer and Justin Finch for helping to raise such an amazing sum for the NSPCC in David Exley’s name.”
