Theresa May has no mandate

With Andrea Leadsom dropping out of the Conservative Party leadership election, not only has the last leading Brexiteer given up on fighting for Britain's future, but we now have a PM with no mandate and no plan.

Once Theresa May formulates a plan, she has to go to the country for approval. She might be leader of the largest party in the House of Commons, but not one single person in the UK voted last May for her to be PM.

Her coronation by 199 Tory MPs is simply not a sign of a healthy democracy.

Calling an election will allow all parties and voices from both sides of the referendum debate to clearly set out a path for the coming years.

This will mean proper scrutiny of pledges, something the people and the country as a whole desperately need.

The most intriguing part? Theresa May knows this. As shadow leader of the House in 2007 when Blair stepped down for Brown, she wrote: “He has no democratic mandate... An early election? Bring it on.”
