This time police have been left with egg on their faces

WITH regard to the article (Gazette, April 19) in which Fr van der Most detailed the vandalism and personal threats he has experienced at St Catherine's Church and at his home, I was a little bit surprised at the response reportedly given by Insp Mark Hammond.

Although I think our police generally do a very good job and don't want to criticise them, there will inevitably be times when things don't go according to plan.

This appears to be one of them, where crimes are reported to the police and not handed to our local station.

Under these circumstances, assuming Insp Hammond has been quoted correctly, would it not have been more appropriate for either he or one of his officers to make a visit to Fr van der Most, and make good the relationship between them and the police, rather than give the impression that you know where we are if you want us?

After all, he had already reported the incidents to the police, with apparently little or no response.
