Last Friday we attended a superb Summertime American Songbook recital given by two supremely talented and engaging young artists, Jessica Zhu (piano) and Marion Wyllie (vocalist).

Worthing’s Denton Lounge provided an ideal venue for this concert, intimate and given in the round before an appreciative audience of all ages. Supported by members of the Worthing Symphony Society, prize-winning pianist Jessica presented Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Albright’s Nightmare Fantasy Rag for piano solo, with great aplomb.

She was joined by one-time fellow student Marion in several jazz-inspired songs by Barber, Copland, Gershwin, Cole Porter, Etta James and Irving Berlin, culminating in the incomparable Night and Day, I get a Kick out of You, There’s no business like Show Business and Let’s face the Music and Dance. Clad in bright red chiffon, she clearly wowed her audience with her stylish presentation

Styled as an Interview Concert, not only were we treated to repertoire both familiar and less so, we were also invited to ask them questions about their work and budding careers, thus gaining a fascinating insight into what has inspired them and what makes them tick.

The next Interview Concert, entitled Reflections across the Sea, will be given by young pianist Anna Szalucka on Friday October 14th at 7.30pm
