We need more quality shops in Worthing

I would like to endorse everything said by Mrs Walker in last week's Herald about Worthing town centre.

It desperately needs more good quality shops, not only for clothes but all household things. John Lewis where are you? Worthing needs you.

A few years ago, when Sussex Stationers closed, I rang our town centre manager to ask why the street market could not be placed on the outskirts of the town instead of in front of shops paying high rent and rates, so high as to drive them out of the town centre.

The market had in the past been successfully sited in the car park rear of the Town Hall and Union Place. I was told that the market only had a licence until 2013! So what changed there!

The town centre manager stated at the time she wanted to make a vibrant town for young people and attract young people’s trendy shops.

This is what we are now supposed to have, but so many quality shops have moved out that the centre is a mess and vast sums have been spent “improving” it to attract more and more coffee shops and restaurants.

Our favourite Indian restaurant some time ago changed into yet another convenience store the owner stating that there were too many in the town competing for the same business.

Many have changed hands regularly or simply cannot compete due the large numbers. Will this trend be allowed to continue until Montague Street has more empty shops?
