What have Worthing's elected representitives been doing all these years?

Great news that the town is putting together a prospectus and sending representatives all that way to the Shard in London to attract inward investment, but am I correct in understanding from your article (February 4 issue) that this activity is 'a first'?

With several large derelict or near derelict sites having scarred the townscape for so many years now, then if this is indeed the case, it is mind-boggling as to why. Just what have our elected representatives and senior officials actually been doing all these years?

Surely most towns of the size of Worthing have had proactive inwards investment campaigns in place for decades? If it is not a first, then fair enough, but either way, let’s get down to the task of questioning our well paid senior local authority personnel – past and present – as to what if anything has actually been going on. For starters, why when it was announced last summer that the Teville Gate area, that glittering architectural prize which so lifts the spirits of visitors arriving here by road or rail, was going to be redeveloped, does apparently absolutely nothing appear to have happened since, yet nobody appears to be accountable for it?

Indeed, why do none of the people responsible not feel obliged to make regular statements on what progress is being made?

Perhaps because we are not asking them forcefully enough, and so they feel that they can continue to get away with it?

Lots of questions, which must be asked constantly and with vigour by residents, businesses and the local media if the knock-on benefits in terms of jobs, housing, business, tourism and indeed, simply being able to fully enjoy an otherwise super place in which to live, are ever to be felt.

In the meantime, let’s hope that the forthcoming trip to London will be the start, finally, of a new era.
