Worthing cycle lane: ‘Improve it, don’t remove it’

Last year Adur and Worthing councils consulted on a local cycling and walking plan which set out a vision of ‘a place where walking and cycling becomes the preferred way of moving around’.

This was supported by 89 per cent of respondents whilst 81 per cent said they would cycle more if routes were improved. The plan was adopted by councillors in June this year with specific details of proposals for the A24.

Post-lockdown, traffic has increased to previous levels if not higher. As people shun public transport out of fear of contagion we desperately need to find alternative ways to get around. If we don’t we face ever increasing car use, congestion and pollution.

The council has committed to be zero carbon by 2030. With a third of local carbon emissions coming from transport, delivering on the cycling and walking plan is vital if we are together to realise that vision.

Whilst the cycle lane is far from perfect, it’s a great start and statement of intent by local politicians. Whilst some want it gone I urge councillors to not remove it, but improve it. After all this is less for those who already cycle than it is for those who don’t, but might if they feel it is safe to do so.

Behaviour change takes time and requires engagement. A great place to start would be for the council to work with local schools and colleges to encourage young people and staff to try cycling.
