Worthing's Montague Centre car park fine was a '˜rip-off'

Living in the area, I travel into Worthing town centre on a regular basis, both for business and pleasure. Unfortunately this is unlikely to happen in the future.

On December 21, first thing in the morning, I parked in the Montague Centre car park, dived into a couple of shops and returned to my vehicle, in under 30 minutes. I paid for my parking and left, having got a receipt, which turned out to be for another vehicle. On January 6, the postman bought me a “fine” of £50 for non payment for parking in that car park.

The car park is operated by CP Plus who have rejected my appeal against this charge.

A further appeal is in progress, but I am not hopeful, and if I fail, the charge becomes £90.

In the meantime, CP Plus are sending me further notices threatening legal action, which is against the British Parking Association Code Of Practice, while an appeal is in progress.

There are many complaints on local forums about this car park, all of a similar nature, and I have been informed the Council Parking Office, in Chapel Road, receives numerous complaints about it. Surely this is something the council should be looking at. Like all seaside towns, Worthing relies on visitors and people using the local facilities, but they won’t come if they are ripped off by a cowboy company operating the car parks.
