Our county's good

IT is not often one hears good news stories about young people.

It seems that we hear mostly about what they do wrong and how they lack respect, etc.

Well, I recently attended a drama production put on by West Sussex Youth Theatre, called Our Country's Good.

It is the story of convicts and Royal Marines sent to Australia in the late 1780s as part of the first penal colony there.

The play tackles themes such as sexuality, punishment, the judicial system and the idea that it is possible for theatre to be a humanising force, which have a strong resonance in today's world.

It was inspiring to see young people put on a superb show, worthy of any theatre.

What's worrying is that the county council is currently thinking of cutting its funding.

This would deprive young people across the county of the opportunity to be part of something good which can be life-changing and which gives a strong, positive message about our great county of West Sussex.
