Like most of you I am saddened that we will be losing BHS from our high street in the coming weeks.
Posters in the windows have finally announced a closing down sale and we will soon lose one of our major traders from Montague Street.
I feel extremely saddened for the staff, many of whom have spent a lifetime there.
However me must now turn to looking to fill it quickly instead of leaving a giant unit empty.
We know from national news that major brands like Primark and Ikea are looking to take on many of BHS’s empty stores and wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could attract a bold new retailer into Worthing.
Along with the potential new eatery brands going into the Montague Centre we could, over the next few months, welcome some fab top names to our town centre – giving us smaller retailers a major boost with footfall numbers.
Walking around the town I have started to notice several new small shops popping up in time for summer and it’s good to again see a mixed blend of independent retail, eating and service providers who will be opening their doors in the next few weeks.
I can’t let my column pass without mentioning what is a life-defining moment for us all today, in the form of the Brexit vote.
It’s certainly looking to be a tight run race and I’m sure plenty of you, like me, will still be summing up our options right up to the moment you put a cross in the box at the polling station.
Working out the truth from the myth this past month, from both has sides, has been an exhausting exercise and, whatever we vote as a nation, I shall be glad when it’s all over!
We are the fifth largest economy in the world and are growing at a rapid rate.
Whatever way the pendulum swings today I am sure that when we all wake up tomorrow morning the world will still be rotating on its axis so we can all return to work as normal. Phew!
