It was a great and welcome boost to the town centre’s economy last weekend with the first-ever running of the town’s half marathon.
From 9am onwards the town’s cafes were packed out with spectators after cheering off their loved ones on the course and many spent the next few hours wandering around the town spending their hard-earned money in the local shops.
It’s great to finally start seeing the rewards of our new pro-active council in accepting and helping to run these new events for the town.
It’s been a slow grind but I think the penny has finally dropped in that the more events and promotion the town runs, the more people will come here.
Only a few years ago events like these, plus the filming of adverts (think Gary Lineker crisps) and TV shows (Cuffs), would have been turned away but are now being welcomed with open arms.
The small amount of disruption is well worth the amount of extra publicity Worthing receives.
It was also extremely interesting to read of the council’s plans to take an investment package to would-be developers for the town.
Time will only tell if the meeting went well but again a pro-active regime certainly won’t harm, and if even one project comes to fruition then all the hard work was worth it.
Only time will tell but the untapped potential in this town is huge and we all need to work collectively to put Worthing back on the map.
