PAUL O’BRIEN: Plastic bag charge has been an instant success in Worthing

It’s been interesting to watch the changing habits of shoppers with the introduction of the new 5p charge on plastic bags.

This long overdue charge has, almost overnight, become an instant success with almost everyone I encounter now using a bag for life or having a pocket stuffed full of second-hand plastic ones!

Even though small retailers don’t have to charge yet, though I’m sure they will do soon, our output of bags has gone down some 50 per cent in the past few weeks as people begin to bring there own.

Let’s hope we continue and follows Scotland’s reduction of 80 per cent usage on last year!

On another note, tonight is one of the busiest nights of the year for Worthing with the annual fireworks off the pier.

While a fair chunk of this is funded by donations from some of the town’s businesses, it is still mostly paid for by the fantastic local Lions club.

The event is completely free and we hope to see upward of 35,000 people in the town centre.

Please don’t forget to put a few coins in the charity collectors’ tubs while you enjoy the whizzes and bangs.

This will make sure the event can continue to be run in future years!
