Play area cash could have been better spent

IN THESE days of tight funds, when council spending cuts will doubtless soon be upon us and whilst our roads and pavements are in a dangerous state of disrepair, I was disappointed, but hardly surprised, to see our local council is wasting our money, yet again.

Instead of repairing the roads and pavements, street-lighting, blocked drains, etc., it is spending the cash on building a new children's play area.

And where are they building it? Right next door to the existing children's play area in Victoria Park.

If the council has money to waste, how about spending it on installing lighting throughout the park, CCTV, increased dog warden patrols, and maybe (if we are really lucky), patrols from our police community support officers (who as far as I can tell, don't realise the "community" extends beyond Montague Street precinct and the High Street).

Our elected councillors we can deal with when next polling day arrives.

But what about the unelected and unaccountable Town Hall jobsworths enjoying their inflated salaries, job security and index-linked pensions who are responsible for this crass waste of our money?
