Rejection puts smile on the face

AFTER the recent, momentous and unexpected "turnarounds" involving environmental planning in Worthing, perhaps it is time to express a profound debt of "thanks".

To all those alert, caring and motivated people in Worthing who have worked successfully to safeguard the Cissbury downland for future generations to enjoy, we thank you.

May the new liaison between our town council and other land management agencies really prosper.

For those maintaining future vigilance and demonstrating their social responsibility to benefit the whole community, we thank you.

To the thousands of people in Worthing, and beyond, who have lobbied for so long, and now so successfully, for a more common sense plan on "greenfield" sites at West Durrington and Titnore Woods, we thank you.

To all the councillors who, on Monday, unanimously rejected the grotesque proposals for more housing development beyond the new Tesco store, we thank you.

Perhaps spring has arrived after all - it's surely enough to put a smile on your face.
