ROTARY ROUND-UP: Austerity lunch raises money for portable water filter charity

This week, Kim Woodley, from the Rotary Club of Worthing, gives an update on the latest and future goings-on.

Worthing Rotary club recently held an ‘Austerity Lunch’ in aid of LifeStraw.

Just under £400 was raised for this extremely worthwhile charity which was set up by a Welsh Rotary club to send portable water filters to countries where the water supplies are contaminated.

These small but extremely effective ‘straws’ remove all bacteria and parasites responsible for causing common diarrhoeal diseases.

LifeStraw requires no electrical power or spare parts, can be carried around for easy access to safe and clean water and costs a mere £10 to produce.

It is just 25cm long and 29mm in diameter and can be hung around the neck.

There is also a family version and a larger community version is available.

The need for safe drinking water is denied to many people in this world.

Every 15 seconds a child will die as a result of drinking unsafe water, so to be able to send these devices to areas in desperate need of clean water is incredibly important.

A LifeStraw is:

• Lightweight – only 56 grams (or two ounces).

• Uses hollow fibre microfiltration technology.

• Purifies a minimum of 1,000 litres (264 gallons) of water.

• Removes virtually all bacteria (99.9999 per cent) and protozoan parasites (99.9 per cent) that can contaminate water, including giardia.

• Reduces turbidity (muddiness) by filtering particulate matter larger than 0.2 microns.

• Made of durable plastic.

• Chemical-free.

• Doesn’t require electrical power, batteries or replacement parts – it’s powered by user-generated suction.

Having seen a LifeStraw demonstrated (after our lunch) we were all hugely impressed and our donation from the lunch will be the start of future fundraising for this innovative, very effective device.
